A Seminar on The Cinematic Cold War between the PRC and the US in Hong Kong (1950s-1960s) held at ULAB

Professor Ying Du from East China Normal University read her paper titled "The Cinematic Cold War between the PRC and the US in Hong Kong (1950s-1960s)" on 28 June 2026 at ULAB. The seminar was jointly organized by the Center for South Asian Studies and the Department of English & Humanities. In her paper Professor Du has depicted Hong Kong's cinematic strive for an identity over the span of almost three decades. In the process she unpacked the maneuvering of an identity project that had to deal with a Censor Board, the Colonial authority, and certain foreign interests without falling into the trap of ultranationalist propaganda discourse.
