To explore the linguistic aspects in longform storytelling, especially the narrative structure, aesthetics and engagement strategies while ensuring objectivity and clear communication, the Workshop on Language of Longform was held at ULAB campus on Monday, February 02. Renowned writer-thinker and the Dean of ULAB’s School of Social Sciences Prof. Sumon Rahman conducted the session.

In his session, Prof. Sumon explained different aspects of language in longform storytelling, especially in news media, using a case study alongside many real life examples. He urged the students to be cautious about their use of language as it may create miscommunication and chaos, if not dealt sensibly. Also, he stressed using language that is communicative yet engaging.

The workshop is a part of the “Ctrl+Alt+Story: Research and Storytelling in Journalism” fellowship program jointly organized by the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Drik where 21 students are currently participating to learn the art of longform storytelling through workshops and masterclasses facilitated by renowned journalists and storytellers. Afterwards, they will pursue investigative journalism projects of their preference with a grant provided by the initiative jointly introduced by ULAB and Drik.
