Digital Productions: ULAB TV Spring 2012 Edition PDF Print E-mail

An exhibit of TV and digital productions was presented by the Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department on April 23 to 30, 2012.  The exhibit brought together the works of students, which included research paper presentations, communication campaign materials, visual art, digital art, photography and film exhibitions.  Every semester, the MSJ Department launches an exhibit – the forthcoming one being its ninth.  Each exhibit is based on a philosophical/sociological concept and/or theory, which is used to guide and harmonize student outputs as well as ground them in communication-related perspectives.

The theme for Spring Semester 2012 is "Life is a Stage: Dramatism in Bangladesh."  The theme highlights the concept of Dramatism, introduced by Kenneth Burke. Dramatism is the belief that language is a strategic, motivated response to a specific situation (Griffin 2006). It views language as a mode of symbolic action rather than a mode of knowledge (Burke 1978). Kenneth Burke's view was not that life is like a drama, but that life is a drama: that humans by nature see and interpret situations as drama. Dramatism theory has the layout of a play, complete with agents (actors), acts (plots), scenes (settings), agencies (tools, instruments, or means) and purposes. Dramatism was Kenneth Burke’s favorite word to describe what he observed when people open their mouths to communicate (Miller 2005). Identification is the common ground that exists between the speaker and audience. Without identification, there is no persuasion (Griffin 2006).

As applied to the curriculum integration programme, the various courses studied  the drama employed in the stage that is Bangladesh.  Students  demonstrated  an understanding of "life is a stage" in their presentations, exhibits and productions.

The exhibit was part of the Department’s Curriculum Integration Program, which was established to facilitate faculty and students from various year levels and study concentrations to work together and learn from each other.  It had two primary objectives.  First, it utilized active learning approaches to enhance the educational experience of students.  Second, it encouraged students to look inward – to reflect on their own personalities, aspirations and identities.  The Department believes that students must be comfortable and confident with themselves before they can positively contribute to others.
