Geoffrey Hiller on "Photography, Multimedia & the Web"

Geoffrey Hiller at ULAB20 Nov 2008

Geoffrey Hiller came to the Media Studies and Journalism department today to speak to students on "Photography, Multimedia and the Web." He discussed how digital technology has revolutionized photography - both for good and for ill.

Positively, the web has brought about an ability to reach broad audiences. Additionally, the use of web techologies such as Flash, XML and Javascript allows photographers to weave still photos, graphics and sound into a sequence and to create full narratives around their work.

He gave numerous online resources to the students, including some of his own sites, such as: Geoffrey Hiller; Burma: Grace Under Pressure; Verve Photo; Soul of Athens; Wordpress.org / Wordpress.com; Soundslides; and Lightbox.

Mr. Hiller has worked as a photographer for over 35 years. Hiller's photo essays on subjects ranging from the Hassidic Jews of Brooklyn to the Quakers in Costa Rica have also included extended projects in Europe, Asia, Latin America and West Africa. His photographs have been published in Geo, Mother Jones, Colors, The New York Times Magazine and numerous publications in Italy, Japan, France and Germany. Since 1995 Hiller has been producing multimedia work for the web which has earned awards from Adobe, the Exploratorium Museum and Yahoo Site of the Week.

Mr. Hiller is currently a Fulbright fellow teaching interactive media and visual communication at the Independent University in Bangladesh.

Innovative Freshers' Orientation Fall 08 most unique in all private universities

18 Oct 2008

Continuing its mission of Active Learning for its students, the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) held a unique Freshers orientation program on Sunday, 18 October 2008.

ULAB organizers first asked, "Who is an orientation really for, students or faculty?" They then based their new program on international models which focus on the needs of the student. According to organizer Juditha Ohlmacher, Assistant Professor in Media Studies and Journalism:

"Having gone through programs in the United States, I believe in the notion that orientations must achieve three goals:
  1) the students should get to know each other;
  2) they should get to know the campus and its faculty, and
  3) they should get to know themselves.
Orientations in America focus on these goals, and I wanted to bring that same mindset to ULAB, which because of its unique emphasis on Liberal Arts and Active Learning, was the perfect venue to realize this goal."

To that end, students were broken into small groups, each one led by two faculty members and two senior students. These groups did activities designed to break the ice between all the participants, including students and faculty. Issues of identity and leadership were explored, while ULAB's mission and values were imparted in an active and enjoyable way.

The faculty themselves had to undergo training to understand the human dynamics involved in the activities. Mustafiz-ur-Raman Shahin, ULAB's Trainer for Physical Movement and Choreography, conducted the training session.

The response from the faculty and students was tremendous. Many expressed surprise and delight at the unique learning activity. "We have never done anything like this before," said one student, "it was a lot or fun and gave us a different perspective on our education."

This year's theme song, Tagore's "Mora shotter o pore mon aji koribo shomor pon," was sung by ULAB's Sangskriti Sangsad. Vice Chancellor Rafiqul Islam told the students: "These are wonderful words, to fight for truth. But there is no truth without knowledge." ULAB's Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Imran Rahman also welcomed the students, asking them not only to learn, but also to make learning fun.
