Dr. Shahnaj Husne Jahan, Professor at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, is an archaeologist involved in teaching and research in the field of archaeology, history and culture of South and Southeast Asia. She is the author of Excavating Waves and Winds of (Ex)change: A Study of Maritime Trade in Early Bengal and editor of Abhijnan: Studies in South Asian Archaeology and Art History of Artefacts (Felicitating A.K.M. Zakariah), published by the British Archaeological Reports International Series, Oxford in 2006 and 2009 respectively. Dr. Jahan also prepared a Cumulative Index to the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh: 1956-2005, which was published by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh in 2005. She has about forty research papers on archaeology and art history published in journals, and edited books at home and abroad since 1994. Since 1996, she has excavated Acheulian, Chalcolithic, Megalithic, and Early Historic sites in India. In 2006, she excavated Wari-Bateshwar, an early historic site in the Narsingdi district, Bangladesh; and since 2009 she has been excavating Bhitargarh, the largest moated settlement in Bangladesh. Dr. Jahan has been honoured with the "Anannya Top Ten" award in 2008 for her significant contributions to the field of archaeology in Bangladesh. She travelled extensively in North America, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Europe to carry out archaeological research, and conduct seminars and workshops. As an Asia Fellow of the Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF), Dr. Jahan has been conducting research during the last six months on maritime trade between Bengal and Thailand from the 4th century BCE to 4th century CE. |
