Ulab Club

Mission:

To encourage the study and appreciation of films and filmmaking; to help increase the creative potential of its students; and to build contacts with the larger film community in Bangladesh.

 

 

Objective:

Film Club will accomplish its mission through:

  • Screening one film of acknowledged quality and achievements per week, followed by a discussion on the film.
  • Creating linkages with other film societies in Bangladesh and abroad.
  • Inviting filmmakers and film thinkers to ULAB for discussions, screenings and seminars.
  • Hold workshops on aspects of filmmaking, including:
    1. Screenwriting
    2. Lighting
    3. Acting
    4. Editing
    5. Sound & Music
    6. Dialogue, etc.
  • Organize one film festival or seminar per year with quality local or international films or filmmakers.
  • Create a collaborative film journal (initially published online via collaborative blogging), with inputs from Film Club members on: analysis, reviews, film clips, and ratings.
  • Propose improvements to Library in film selection and encourage purchase of dedicated DVD player or computer with headphones for watching films.

Structure:

  • The Advisor of the Film Club is Ms. Juditha Ohlmacher, Assistant Professor, MSJ.
  • In order to organize activities and share responsibilities, there will be the following positions  which will constitute the Executive Committee:
    1. President
    2. Vice President
    3. General Secretary
    4. Finance Secretary
    5. Organizing Secretary
    6. Publicity Secretary
  • These posts are for one year only. Elections will be held for these posts at the beginning of the Spring Term, or as needed throughout the year. A snap election may be called by the Advisor or with permission of the Advisor, as needed.
  • In order to encourage participation by all members of the club, individual members can participate in committees, or even head a specific committee. Committee heads will report to the President.

Brief Description:

With the help of the Director of Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Dr. Brian Shoesmith, the Club was founded in October 2006 by 1st Batch MSJ student G. Sumdany Don.
Film Club was the first club to organize a concert in ULAB during the Spring 2007 Orientation. It also organized the first ever fashion show in the Club Day Spring 2007, and a comedy stage drama in Summer 2007. Film Club organized the first-ever Film Festival in this Summer 07, which included the Director of Academic Affairs Dr. Kazi Anis Ahmed as the Chief Guest for an audience of 300.
The club also screened the documentary movie DESHANTORI and introduced the youth activist group PHIRIYE ANO BANGLADESH. A short film festival was organized by the Film Club in collaboration with Future Shorts, the world's largest short film network, on 17th November, 2007 at the ULAB auditorium.
In Summer 2008, the Department of Media Studies and Journalism and the Film Club arranged Summer Filmmaker Series. At last we celebrated our 2nd anniversary on 25th October, 2008 through screening a movie and cultural program. This event was media cast nation wide by Radio Today, Boishakhi channel and The Daily Ittefaq. Our next target is to make a short Film by our Film club members.
