DEH Seminar on Referencing |

ULAB DEH organized a session on referencing in academic writing for the students who are preparing to write their graduate dissertations in the Fall 2011 semester on December 24, 2011.  A power-point presentation on how to use the MLA style Manual for the purpose of referencing and citation in academic writing was conducted by Nasrin Islam, Senior Lecturer of DEH. The faculty supervisors and the dissertation students were present in the session and Professor Mohit UL Alam, Head of the Department, along with Professor Kaiser Haq and Professor Golam Sarwar Chowdhury, also participated in the discussion and clarified certain points with their own suggestions. Overall the session was a hands-on experience for all about using the latest 7th edition MLA handbook. The seminar was part of ULAB's Department of English and Humanities (DEH) Seminar Series, in which students can attend lectures on various subjects which face literature or language students and teachers. The Future of Public Relations in Bangladesh |

ULAB MSJ organized a roundtable discussion on “The Future of Public Relations in Bangladesh” November 24, at the ULAB Seminar Room, Campus B. The resource speakers in the event were Nazim Farhan Choudhury (Adcomm), M. Rizwan Sharif (Northbrook PR), Khawaza Main Uddin (Daily Sun), Abdur Razzak (Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) and Mahbubul Haque Osmani (ABC Radio), while ULAB Lecturer Imtiaz A. Chowdhury facilitated the discussion.
The discussants firmly sh owed their hope about the future of Public Relations as a ‘major concentration study area’ in Bangladesh. In the discussion, they provided a detailed scenario of PR professionals working in a country that is expected to grow six percent annually (given a business as usual scenario) for the next 20 years. Along with the economic growth; the ongoing development & increasing citizen's participation in the ICT sector, and the enactment of the 'Right to Information' law has also ensured proper PR practices to detach itself and surface from the established system saturated with propaganda. Being practitioners themselves, the speakers ensured that the industry will grow together in a complimentary and supportive fashion, provided a criteria of professional standard is set. They also stressed that proper PR education is the most influential stepping stone in bringing the 'professionalism' to the current PR 'occupation.' The discussants appreciated the newly introduced 'Public Relations' study concentration under the Media Studies & Journalism Department of ULAB.

ULAB MSJ organized a Colloquium entitled “Qualitative Immediacy: The Inherent Problem of Cinema” on November 24, at the ULAB Seminar, Campus B. Associate Professor Anis Pervez was the main speaker of the forum.
Abstract of Mr. Anis Pervez’s Speech:
Cinema, the mechanical rep roduction of life and living in moving image, is one of the most popular media that has harnessed human’s observation of their experience. Cinema is characterized by its qualitative immediacy that wears away the distance between life and its reproduction. It is equally true that the qualitative immediacy is what constraints cinema from transcending popular expectation. Cinema suffers from a tension between catering to people’s habitual perception and cinema’s power to breaking its own form, which is not the case with theatre, paining and other plastic arts. However, cinema did not cease to working on its form. Rather, with the help of progressive technology and creative endeavor, cinema is constantly reproducing itself by undoing, redoing and reconfiguring its form.

Senior Indian journalist visits ULAB |

Mr. Nantoo Banerjee, a journalist and author from India visited ULAB on 22nd of November. He spoke to the students of MSJ 103: English for the Media class and shared his long experience as a journalists and media expert for over 30 years.  "English can open up the new vistas of opportunities for all of you", he told ULAB students adding "it's no more a language rather it's a skill which you have to master." He also said that journalism is the most exciting profession in the world. Citing the example that former US President Bill Clinton's daughter wants to be a journalist and "she is certainly not doing it for money but excitement." Mr Nanerjee's up coming book titled "When Bookkeeping means Bookcooking" will be launched at London Book Fair and New York Book Exop this year. He is also working as a Consulting Editor of Delhi-based Indian Press Agency which provides editorial services for Indian media.

ULAB Electronics Club organized a "Hands on training on Telecommunication" |

 ULAB Electronics Club organized a "Hands on training on Telecommunication" for the students on November 23, 2011 with a view to sharpen their skills. Topics such as optical fiber communication and satellite communication were discussed. Also the students underwent experiments based on the optical fiber communication. The program was conducted by the Teaching Assistant OF ETE, Aminul Islam. A good number of students attended the training. |
