ULAB, BIID hosts WPS Journal Launching PDF Print E-mail
The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB, http://www.ulab.edu.bd) and Bangladesh Institute of ICT in Development (BIID) will jointly host the launching of the first issue of the ICT for Development Working Paper Series on December 15, 2011 (10:30 am to 12:00 pm) at ULAB Campus B Seminar Room, Dhanmondi, Dhaka City.  The Working Paper Series aims to articulate, capture and document success stories, best practices, lessons learnt and shortcomings of ICT4D projects or researches in developing countries.

ULAB, BIID hosts WPS Journal Launching PDF Print E-mail
ULAB MSJ and Bangladesh Institute of ICT in Development (BIID) jointly hosted the launching of the first issue of the ICT for Development Working Paper Series on December 15, 2011. The Working Paper Series aims to articulate, capture and document success stories, best practices, lessons learnt and shortcomings of ICT4D projects or researches in developing countries.

For its first issue, the journal contains six articles illustrating the potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to benefit the bottom of the pyramid in terms of participatory governance, access to banking services and increased agricultural productivity. The line-up is as follows:

  • Bottom of the Pyramid Expenditure Patterns on Mobile Phone Services in Selected Emerging Asian Countries by Aileen Agüero and Harsha de Silva
  • Mobile banking:  Overview of Regulatory Framework in Emerging Markets by Rasheda Sultana
  • Factors Affecting e-Government Assimilation in Developing Countries by Boni Pudjianto and Zo Hangjung
  • Inclusive Development through e-Governance: Political Economy of e-Government Projects in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in India by Rajendra Kumar
  • New Media, Knowledge Acquisition and Participatory Governance in Rural Bangladesh by Jude William Genilo and Marium Akther
  • e-Krishok: A Campaign to Promote Agricultural Information and Services through ICT  by Shahid Uddin Akbar, Parvez Mohd. Asheque, Shariful Islam

The target audience of this journal are those who wish to learn how to encourage adoption of ICT, applications and impact assessment, and also researchers who are interested in the diffusion of ICT for developmental projects in developing countries. Therefore, the target audience includes ICT service providers, policymakers, and academics/researchers, students of social science, information systems, and information technology and development studies.
 
Academics/researchers/practitioners are invited to submit their work that addresses issues related to adoption, diffusion, and implementation and monitoring/impact assessment of ICT for development projects in developing countries. In fact, ICT4D being a crosscutting issue the working paper series will feature writing from almost any sectors or area namely E-Agriculture, E-Livelihood, E-Governance, E-Health, E-Education, E-Commerce, E-SME, E-Environment, Climate Change, etc in relation to ICT. The WPS encourages papers that are problem-finding, problem solving, forward-looking, sharing relevant experiences and investigating controversial and important issues.   

 
CSD will attend a Round Table discussion on the climate change and migration PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Rathana Peou, deputy director and Associate Professor of CSD, will attend a round table meeting to discus the state of the art of Climate Change impact on Migration. The event is organized by Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) in association with Center for American Progress (CAP), USA. It will take place on the 15th Decmber, 2011. 

The visiting senior fellows of CAP, USA, Mr. Michael Werz and Ms. Caroline Wadhams and Dr. A. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director will make keynote speeches to statements for discussion.  Dr. Rathana will be acompanied by Marie-Pierre Arseneault, research coordinator of CSD.

ULAB Electronics Club launched a Photo exhibit on the images  of  "The Greatest Inventions of Time” from the date of 11/12/2011 to 15/12/2011 at Campus-B Lobby.

 

 
Anwar Hossains' Photo Exhibit:“CALCUTTA- KOLKATA” PDF Print E-mail

ULAB MSJ has organized a photography exhibition entitled “CALCUTTA- KOLKATA” from December 11 to 14 at ULAB Campus A Lobby.

Depicting the life, culture, and politics of the people of the Indian city of Kolkata, the exhibit showcases 33 photographs of Anwar Hossain. Some of his photographs contain the portraits of ordinary people of Kolkata, some represent the blend of nature & culture and everyday street scenes and others tell us about the belief of the people. One provoking matter about his works is the photographer’s presence in the frame:  either his hand, shadow, or held objects which he entitled “narcissism”.  
   
Anwar Hossain, photographer, cinematographer and architect, was born at Dhaka in 1948. Photographing since 1967, won 60 international awards in photography & is the author of seven major photo-books on Bangladesh, Dhaka, Women and France. Anwar filmed about 15 fictions and 30 documentary films with numerous awards in cinematography. He served as the sole jury in the Commonwealth photo contest at Cyprus in 1980, film jury in France in 1999 and the principal national jury in Bangladesh 2008 – 2011. Arps, Afiap, Asiipc, Anwar has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Nsu Dhaka. A Bangla – France citizen, Anwar has been living in Paris since 1993.

Department of ETE organized a "Prize Giving Ceremony" on the date of 7 th December,2011 based on the events held in the past two semesters.Dr. A. H. M. Asadul Huq, Head of ETE, was the Cheif guest and Dr. Sazzad Hossain, Head of CSE was the Special guest on that event.
