ULAB Roundtable on Media Production Graduates.


The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department held a Roundtable Discussion entitled “Prospects of Media Production in Bangladesh” on December 17, 2009, at the ULAB Auditorium.  The purpose of the activity was to know the knowledge, attitude and skills required of media studies graduates by the industry. Panelists to the roundtable discussion included:  Fahmida Irfan (Drik), Tamzid Siddiq (Zanala Bangladesh), Abdullah Al Masud (INTERACTIVE), Hasnain Khurshed (Green Planet) and Maksud Jamil (nTV).

The discussants touched on the following issues:  What is the nature of media production in Bangladesh?  Who are the clients and what is produced for them?  What are the challenges of media production houses in the country?  What are the prospects?  What knowledge, attitude and skills are required to be successful in the profession?

ULAB opened its doors in October 2004 after obtaining permission from the University Grants Commission.  The University is devoted to developing young minds to their fullest potential through the free and creative pursuit of knowledge.  It offers degrees in English and Humanities; Media Studies and Journalism; Business Administration; Computer Science and Engineering; and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering.  The MSJ department has majors in Journalism, Digital Production and Mass Communication.

ULAB Students Visit Save the Children Australia office and Aparajeyo Bangladesh PDF Print E-mail

MSJ Students Visit Save the Children Australia and Aparajeyo Bangladesh offices.

Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department students visited the international non-government organization Save the Children Australia and Aparajeyo Bangladesh (Shelter home for street children) to formulate its communication campaign plan on child rights. 

The 14 students enrolled in the course “Development Communication and Media Advocacy” are required to generate a public awareness plan together with prototypes of communication materials (such as posters, brochures, pamphlets, etc.).  Save the Children will use the student works as inputs for their communication campaign plan aimed at increasing awareness among children in the country’s six divisions regarding the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As part of the activity, Save the Children Team Leader G. Nayeem Wahra briefed the students on child rights in general and on the UN charter in particular at the Save the Children Australia office , Dhanmondi.  The students had an exposure trip to Aparajeyo Bangladesh, shelter home for street children at 55/1 North Jatrabari, Dhaka. The coordinator of the Shelter home Mr. Selim delivered his talk on and about Aparajeyo Bangladesh and the student spoke, interviewed and interacted with the children of the organization.

On December 17, students will present their communication campaign plan to NGO representatives and to MSJ Head Jude Genilo.  The said campaign plan and the prototypes of communication materials will be included in the department’s curriculum integration exhibit entitled “Dialogues Amidst Contradictions: Dialectics of Family Relations in Contemporary Bangladesh” on December 21. 

 

 

 
Dr. Shahnaj Husne Jahan presents paper in Indian Museum PDF Print E-mail

Dr. Shahnaj Husne Jahan, Assistant Professor, presented a paper titled "Bhitargarh: A Locus of Commercial Relations between Bengal, Middle Ganga Valley, Trans-Himalayan Region, Middle Brahmaputra Valley and Beyond in a seminar on “Cultures of the North East India: Ethnic and Archaeological Background”.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Indian Museum, Kolkata and Centre for Archaeological Studies and Training Eastern India and was held between 5th & 7th November 2009.

 
3rd ULAB BOOK FAIR 2010 PDF Print E-mail

The day-long (10:00 am-7:00 pm) 3rd ULAB BOOK FAIR 2010 will be held on January 1, 2010 at Campus-A Lobby (ground floor) of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (H 56, R 4/A, Dhanmondi, Dhaka-1209).

Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, educationist and former Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University will be present as the chief guest.

The fair will remain open to all and books will be sold on 15%-35% discount. 15 suppliers and publishers will participate at the fair.

UN Library Network Workshop: Climate Change, Social Information Network and Bibliometrics PDF Print E-mail

UN Library Network Workshop on Climate Change, Social Information Network and Bibliometrics was organized jointly by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Dhaka and University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and at ULAB’s Computer Lab (House-56, Road 4/A, Dhanmondi, Dhaka-1209) on 19 November 2009 from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm.

M. Moniruzzaman, Reference Officer, UNIC Dhaka delivered welcome address.

Dr. Shahnaz Husne Jahan, Asstt Prof & Ex Coordinator of ULAB Library delivered opening remarks. She focused on the importance of Libraries for educational Institutions.

Kazi Ali Reza, Officer-in–charge, UNIC Dhaka presented papers on Climate Change/ Seal the Deal. He emphasized the impact of climate change over the globe and especially for Bangladesh perspective. 

Professor Dr. S. M. Mannan, Department of Information Science and Library Management, Dhaka University, delivered speech on Social Science Information Network in Bangladesh. He emphasized to extend and strengthen the Information Network especially among Libraries.

Dr. S.M Zabed Ahmed, Department of Information Science and Library Management, Dhaka University, delivered speech on Bibliometrics.

Participants (Library Personnel) from 33 organizations attended the workshop. The workshop came to an end with a question & answer session.
