ULAB Hosts Tareque Masud Retrospective |

ULAB, in association with Tareque Masud Memorial Trust organized a program titled "Tareque Masud's Vision: The Way Forward" at the ULAB auditorium on February 10, 2012. Catherine Masud, filmmaker and wife of late Taeque Masud, was present at the program as chief guest, while eminent film director Morshedul Islam, head of ULAB Media Studies and Journalism Department (MSJ) Prof Jude W Genilo, ULAB faculty members and the students also attended the program. The first part of the daylong program started with a slideshow of photographs on Tareque Masud and screening of two of his films - "Adam Surat" and "Noroshundor". Cathrine Masud, told how "Adam Surat" had been converted into the digital format at a studio in New York and this was the first screening of the film at ULAB. She said the film would soon be released all over Bangladesh except Dhaka.
Head of MSJ department Jude Genilo said, "ULAB as a venue of this retrospective is very logical as the university’s MSJ department has one of the finest digital films and television production programs in Bangladesh." "Many of the future filmmakers of the country are expected to come from ULAB," he hoped. He said a discourse on Masud’s work, life and philosophy is now building which the students of ULAB as well as the young generation should know about. Later, a roundtable on Tareque Masud’s vision was organised. Assistant Professor of MSJ department Juditha Ohlmacher presented the keynote paper at the roundtable in which Cathrine Masud, Morshedul Islam and Shahnewaz Kabir were the panel members. Ohlmacher, in her keynote speech said, "Tareque used to believe that film should not be crude, nor should it be propaganda. It should be art and should be relevant to the society." She mentioned that Tareque and Cathrine in their films examined different aspects of nature and origin of politics, culture, society and national identify. She expressed hope that the young generation would implement Masud’s vision forward. The program was rounded off with the screening of Masud’s latest film "Runway". MSJ senior lecturer Shams bin Quader moderated the program.

1st DEH Faculty Presentation Spring 12 |

The 1st Faculty Presentation of the Department of English and Humanities was held on February 9, 2012, as part of seminar series that it organizes every semester. Ms. Tahmina Zaman, Lecturer of DEH gave a talk on J. M. Coetzee’s Life and Times of Michael K, composed in the post Apartheid period of South Africa. She focused on the psychological and physical oppression on Michael K, the central character of the novel, and his passivity or silence about his sufferings. The speaker further analyzed Michael K’s crisis of self with the state throughout the circular journey from Sea Point and back again and the refusal to conform to Post – Apartheid South Africa. It was noted that Michael K’s resistance from the society was unique in the sense that, he cuts himself off from the society, calls himself an outcast and feels he is untouched by the doctrines of the society. The session ended with questions from the faculties and students of DEH and with a note of thanks from the HOD, Professor Mohit Ul Alam. |

Bhitargarh Excavation 2012 Begins |

Bhitargarh Excavation 2012 began on 16 January 2012, reports ULAB Professor and Archeologist Dr. Shahnaj Husne Jahan. Sixteen ULAB students (7 girls and 9 boys) of the course GED 324: Experiencing the Past have participated in this season. The team is currently unearthing one new structure in the innermost quadrangle of ancient city of Bhitargarh. On 30 January 2012, the team organized a seminar on History and Heritage of Bhitargarh in the Maharajar Dighi area. In the seminar the students shared their view with local residence, school masters and local journalists. On 4 February 2012, local MP, Majaharul Haque Pradhan visited the excavation site.

Dr. Rathana peou van den Heuvel was on France Culture Radio Tuesday, January 31st, where she spoke about the state of natural disasters and environmental migrations, along with François Gemenne and Pauline Brucker. This topic is particularly captivating in light of the latest events of 2010-2011 where almost 40 million people in the world have been forced to be displaced or exiled for such reasons. The radio program was called Tout un monde, and it was broadcasted on Tuesday 31st of January at 3pm Paris time (8pm Dhaka time). Dr. Rathana peou van den Heuvel is Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD). |

Workshop on Disaster Preparedness |

A three-day long workshop on "Urban Volunteer Training on Collapsed Structure, Search, Rescue, Fire Fighting and First Aid" was held at ULAB from 26 January to 28 January, 2012. It was jointly organized by the Center for Sustainbale Development (CSD) and ULAB SD Club. The training was provided by Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense. A day-long practical training at the field as well as two day long theory class complied the workshop. More than fifty faculty members, students, admin officers and admin stuffs attended the workshop. The workshop included collapsed structure rescue, earthquake preparation, fire fighting and first aid. The participants were presented with certificates by the Fire Service. They will now be recognized as Urban Volunteers of Fire Service. Brigadier General Abu Nayeem Md. Shahidullah, Director General of Fire Service & Civil Defense, was the special guest of the opening ceremony and Prof. Imran Rahman, acting Vice Chancellor of ULAB, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. |
