US journalist Marguerite Sullivan of the Center for International Media Assistance will speak on "Media and Democracy." Talk will be followed by a Q&A. Date: Tuesday, August 4 Time: 2:40pm - 4:00pm Location: ULAB Auditorium, Campus A US Journalist Marguerite H. Sullivan, Director of the Center for International Media Assistance at the Washington-based National Endowment for Democracy, will share her thoughts on “Media and Democracy”. During her talk, she is expected to answer the following questions: What is democracy? What are the essential features and prerequisites of a democracy? What is the role of media in safeguarding a democracy? How countries can strengthen their media institutions in this global era?
Sullivan has done extensive communication training worldwide. She is author of the award-winning book entitled “A Responsible Press Office: An Insider’s Guide,” which was translated in more that two dozen languages. She was Executive Director of the US National Commission for UNESCO. She started her professional career as a journalist; working for newspapers in Boston and California and Washington D.C. She became a reporter/columnist for Copley News Service, executive editor of “The Washington Woman” and president of the Washing Press Club. Sullivan was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard University, has served and chaired several committees affiliated with Stanford University and serves as a member of the National Council for Humanities. She holds a bachelor degree in history and a master degree in journalism from Stanford University.
The topic “media and democracy” fits with ULAB’s media studies and journalism program, which has study concentrations in Journalism, Digital Production and Mass Communication. It has 180 students at present.
