Billboards as a Cultural Text: Introducing Cultural Studies Print

Return to Freud, the reading group on sociocultural and literary issues, run by ULAB Debating Club invites you to the first one of the Guest Lecture Series of Spring 2011. Mr. Raihan Sharif, an Assistant Professor of the English Department, Jahangirnagar University is going to engage the lecture.

The topic is "Billboards as a Cultural Text: Introducing Cultural Studies."

Initially the talk will focus on when, where, why, and what of Cultural Studies. Then it will move on to discuss how of this interdisciplinary practice using a few billboards in Dhaka. It will use findings from Semantics and Deconstruction and will appropriate insights from a wide range of thinkers: Saussure, Barthes, Eco, Freud, Lacan, Derrida, Foucault, Hall, Baudrillard and so on. Finally, it will ponder over the promises and drawbacks of Cultural Studies.
