Business Journalism Forum Print
Thursday, December 02 2010, 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Katalyst-ULAB Conduct Business Journalism Forum.

The University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Katalyst will conduct a forum entitled “Why Business Journalism Matters” on December 2 (Thursday), 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the ULAB Auditorium.  During the activity, US Journalist Ralph Frammolino will tackle the history of business journalism, share his personal experiences and discuss the prospects of the field in Bangladesh.

Ralph has worked with the Los Angeles Times from 1993 to 2007.  He was a finalist at the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting and won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting.  He was also awarded the 1997 Los Angeles Press Club for Investigative Reporting.  Aside from these, he taught at the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media in Bangalore; and the University of Southern California. Ralph is now an international journalism consultant.  His clients include the World Bank, The Daily Star, USAID/PROGATI and Katalyst.

The forthcoming forum was possible through the Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 16 between ULAB and Katalyst introducing a study concentration on “Business Journalism” under the Media Studies and Journalism Department.  The project has five major components to include curriculum development, faculty development, course materials development, facilities development and program promotions.

The Business Journalism study concentration is expected to meet the country’s urgent need for competent journalists who are grounded not only in business and journalism but who also possess a broad knowledge base that only a liberal arts education can provide.  To develop the curriculum, the parties will undertake roundtable discussions/consultations, hold sessions with foreign consultants and conduct a focused group discussion with industry leaders.  In developing its faculty, the parties will launch seminars on course module development and case study writing.  They will also expose faculty to business television and print journalism media.
