Synopsis:
More than one year after the cyclone AILA hit Bangladesh in May 2009, affecting 3,9 millions of people in the country, thousands of families remain displaced, living on the embankments in makeshift shelters. Embankment reparation still needs to be achieved and hundreds of villages are flooded during each high tide. People living in the affected areas, both those displaced and those who returned to their land, face difficulties to access safe drinking water due to the salinity of the water and to the destruction of the water infrastructures. Basic sanitation facilities are lacking as well, in terms of quantity, quality and privacy- particularly for women and girls. As a result, water-borne diseases are widespread in the area. Furthermore, household shelters have also been severely damaged due to breaches of the embankments.

Solidarités International intervened immediately after AILA to restore access to water and sanitation and carries on with its action by working in Satkira and Khulna districts restoring access to safe drinking water, sanitation and basic housing conditions. In partnership with the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), Solidarites International developed this photography exhibition and documentary to enlighten the situation of the AILA affected people, their remaining needs and the challenges they still face more than a year after this natural disaster. This exhibition will also show Solidarites International’s response and will share around the challenges and best practices in the field of water-sanitation and Shelter in this specific context of coastal area.
