Learning Documentary Film Making from Other Learners -
The Media Studies and Journalism Department will host a forum on "Learning Documentary Making from Other Learners" on July 22, 10:00 to 12:00, at the ULAB Auditorium, Campus A. The activity will feature four short documentaries produced by 16 Bangladeshi youth who attended the eight-day documentary filmmaking workshop sponsored by the Bangladesh Documentary Council (BDC) and the British Council last March 2010. One of the participants to the workshop was ULABian Raffael Ahsan.
For the MSJ Department, peer teaching is an important aspect of active learning. "Students also learn from other students," stated MSJ Department Head Jude Genilo. "Peer teaching is an effective way to learn since students can easily empathize with fellow students. In addition, beginning filmmakers would most likely be enticed by simple works and the films to be shown in the forum are simple - depicting everyday urban life scenes and averaging five minutes in length." The films include "Calling Home" (about a rickshaw puller), "Bitter Lemon" (about a traffic policeman), "My Dream" (about a beggar) and "Waiting for Godot" (about a floating worker). Collectively, the films are known as "Dhaka Stories."
BDC President Shabnam Ferdousi and Workshop Coordinator Anwar Chowdhury will facilitate the forum. Select participants to the workshop, meanwhile, will discuss their films and their learning to ULAB students. Noemie Mendelle and Sonja Henrici, both from the Scottish Documentary Institute, conducted the said workshop. The workshop focused on developing understanding of documentary filming from creative and technical perspectives. |
