Dialogue on Economic Empowerment of the Poorest Introducing Shiree and the Idea Entrepreneur Print
Sunday, May 30 2010, 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Dialogue on "Economic Empowerment of the Poorest Introducing Shiree and the Idea Entrepreneur”.

Institute for Sustainable Development,ULAB is going to organize a session on “Economic Empowerment of the Poorest Introducing Shiree and the Idea Entrepreneur” on the 30th May, 2010 at Campus A with the support of shiree and UKaid. This will create a common platform for network linkage between ISD and shiree through increased knowledge towards sustainable development. This session will take place on 30th May, 2:00pm, at the Meeting Room (601), Campus A.

Project Description
Shiree is a challenge fund established by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in partnership with the Government of Bangladesh with an objective to lift 1 million extreme poor households out of poverty by 2015. shiree in Bengali means ‘steps’ or ‘ladder’ to portray shiree’s aim of lifting ‘household’ out of poverty in steps. It was designed to support Bangladesh in meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 1 to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

Shiree like to create a platform for graduates from your department to work with grass-roots based NGOs in Bangladesh. These ‘entrepreneurs’ of ideas will submit a brief description of their idea on the shiree website. Interested NGOs in Bangladesh will then select their preferred idea and help develop it into a poverty reduction programme which shiree will consider funding. The platform created by us will be provided free of cost to all parties and the level of involvement between the NGO and Idea Entrepreneur will be mutually agreed. A number of similar schemes exist across the world, including the BBC World Challenge, World Bank’s Development Marketplace and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, where individuals and institutions can apply for small-scale funding to change the lives of the poor.

A new generation of development  practitioners
In the new round of funding for innovations in 2010, Shiree will provide grants to NGOs working with marginalised groups across Bangladesh with a specific emphasis on the following groups (although not exclusively):
Physically challenged; Elderly people; Ethnic, cultural and religious minority groups; culturally bound occupational groups; Street dwellers; Working children and adolescents.

How student can be  involved
We would like you to promote the concept of the Idea Entrepreneur amongst your students. This is a great opportunity for students interested in international development to become part of a UKaid-funded poverty reduction programme that is promoting innovations in development.

The students can become Idea Entrepreneur by registering their idea(s) with a brief personal profile at www.shiree.org/innovationfund.

ISD together with the department of Business will support any student who will be willing to prepare a proposal of idea for Shiree.
Location: 2pm, ULAB Auditorium, Campus A
