Prof. Lewis Speaks on Technology and Identity Print
Thursday, April 22 2010, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Prof. Glen Lewis of University of Canberra Speaks on Technology and Identity.

The Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) Department will host a public lecture entitled “Technology and Identity in the Modern World” at the ULAB Auditorium on April 22, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  The public lecture, to be delivered by University of Canberra Prof. Glen Lewis, looks at the individual’s use of technology and how it shapes his or her identity.  What are the photographs we paste on facebook?  What are the e-groups we belong to at the internet?  What are the blogs we post for our virtual friends to read?  All these are part of constructing our identities.

The activity is the third forum under the MSJ Department’s Curriculum Integration Program for Spring 2010 – the theme of which is based on the theory of Technological Determinism of Marshall McLuhan.  The first forum entitled “Technology, Thinking and Talking in Contemporary Bangladesh” was held on March 11 with A.B.M. Hamidul Mishbah (ICT Lawyer) and Anis Pervez (Associate Professor, MSJ Department, ULAB) as speakers.  The second forum entitled “Digital Bangladesh in the 21st Century” was conducted on April 8.  During the activity, Prof. Brian Shoesmith, adjunct faculty at Edith Cowan University, explained the Digital Bangladesh vision of the Government of Bangladesh and situated it with trends in global communications.

On April 29, the MSJ Department will exhibit the works of students under the Curriculum Integration Programme.  The five courses under the Program include “Media, Technologies and Society” (Anis Pervez), “Multimedia Production” (Imtiaz Ahmed Chowdhury), “Introduction to Photography” (Razibul Hossain), “Video Communication 1” (Razibul Hossain) and “Visual Communication” (Marium Akther).
