The Media Studies and Journalism Department of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), in cooperation with the Bangladesh Documentary Council, will host on March 25, 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the ULAB Auditorium the screening of the documentary film “Life on the Margins.” Directed by Ittukgula Changma, the film is about the struggles of the Khyang ethnic community in the Chittagong Hill Tract (CHT). The synopsis reads: Members of the Khyang ethnic community in CHT are by birth “Lovers of Nature.” Language, traditional dresses, ornaments and social norms all constitute the culture of this small ethnic community, which is at the verge of extinction. They are being evicted from their homes and their land. They are increasingly subjected to aggression from the mainstream community.
The film, which runs for 33 minutes, was produced in March 2009 by the Hill Film Society with the assistance of the Research Initiatives Bangladesh. The film’s director Ittukgula Changma has made the following documentary films: “Terrified Voices” (October 2003), “Ballad of Land Alienation 4/3” (May 2006), and “Khumi I Awmani Reta or Khumi Lives (November 2006). After the exhibition, the director and members of the indigenous community will take questions/comments from the audience. |
